It’s the start of another school year so now’s a good time to get into good habits that will help you reach your potential in the coming year. We asked last year’s junior and leaving cert students for advice and tips that they would give to other students. Here’s what they said:
7 tips to get this year off to a good start
Get your study area sorted
A tidy room is a tidy mind. Put some time into getting your study area sorted out so that you know where everything is. It might be a good idea to invest in some folders to store all your notes.
Loads of students we spoke to pointed out the importance of minimizing distractions if you are to study effectively. Try to avoid checking Facebook or your phone constantly as you will not be learning effectively with this level of distraction.
Start early in the year, don’t put it off
The earlier you get into a good study routine the better. Once you study for a few days in a row you will get into a routine and won’t find it as hard to get started.
Do your homework
Many students complain that with so much homework being given out by teachers it’s hard to get any time to study. Don’t forget that most of your homework that teachers give you will be helping you prepare for upcoming exams. Later in the year the amount of homework given will decrease and allow you more revision time.
Make notes now!
There’s no way you will be able to remember information that you learn off now by next summer. You should try and put your time into creating good quality concise notes or mind maps for yourself. This will help you build a deep understanding of what you are learning and save you time once it comes to exam time.
It’s really important to study actively. One of the best ways you can do this is by testing yourself using past exam questions. You should consider getting a full access Studyclix PLUS+ account early in the year as this allows you to see all past exam questions that have come up on any topic as well as marking schemes, A1 student notes and sample answers.
Eat well, sleep well and exercise
Even if you’re studying a lot, It’s really important to keep some balance in your life. Sleeping for at least 8 hours a night, eating well and taking some exercise daily will keep you energized and help you study even more effectively.
Good luck with the new year and let us know if you have any questions!
