Being organised is a no-brainer when it comes to studying well. One of the steps in being organised with your school year is knowing all the important dates in your calendar: deadlines, application dates, open days, etc. and working towards them, knowing how much time you have.

Here, we've saved you time by listing all of the major dates in this year's school calendar, and categorising them into School Holidays, Leaving Cert dates and Junior Cert dates so you can see them all in one place.

We recommend printing out our Year Planner and filling in the important dates for you.


School Holidays:

October 2018 mid-term break

Monday 29th October 2018 to Friday 2nd November 2018.

Christmas 2018

Schools close on Friday 21st December 2018.
Schools re-open on Monday 7th January 2019

February 2019 mid-term break

Schools close from Monday 18th February 2019 to Friday 22nd February 2019.

Easter 2019

Schools close on Friday 12th April 2019 and reopen on Monday 29th April 2019.


Leaving Cert:

Higher Options 2018 (Dublin)

12-14th September 2018. The Dublin-based event where you can check out your options after the LC. Universities, colleges and more have stands with all the information you need about furthering your studies. If you get the opportunity to attend Higher Options this year, make sure to check out this blog before you go!

HPAT (Health Professionals Admission Test) Registration Deadline

20 January 2019 5.15pm. Most people looking to pursue Medicine at 3rd Level Education will have to take the HPAT. If you want to do this, make sure to register before this date!

CAO Application Deadline

1st February 2019. This is the closing date for CAO Applications. This does not mean that you can't change the order of your preferences on your CAO after this date, it just means you need to have an idea put down on paper. We give loads of advice on how to fill in your CAO application here.

Interviews, Portfolios, Performances, etc.

February-April 2019. For some courses, you are required to attend an interview, sit an extra exam, present a portfolio or perform. These courses range from Art to Music to Medicine where these extra assesments are needed in addition to your Leaving Cert to achieve a place on the course. The dates for these assesments can be found here.

The Oral Exams

The exact date you will have your oral exam will depend on your school, but it will be between Monday 25th March and Friday the 5th April. For advice on the orals, check out our blog page and subject guides or our blog on how to learn a language.
The Music Practical also take place during this time which is worth 50% of your overall grade. We have the best advice for the practical in our How to get a H1 in Music Guide.

The Written Exam for Leaving Certificate Vocational Progamme (LCVP) Links Modules

(to be confirmed). The Written Examination is worth 40% and takes place in your own school from 10:00-12:30. You can help yourself become familar with the topics asked on the LCVP paper here.

CAO Change of Mind

4th May 2019. The CAO Change of Mind facility opens, this will allow you to change your choices and the order of preference of your choices on your CAO Application. The Change of Mind closes on the 1st of July 2019 where it will remaine closed. All your questions regarding the CAO Change of Mind are answered here.

First day of Leaving Cert Examinations

CBA Deadlines and Timeframes

Classroom-based assessments in subjects like English, Business Studies and Science have different deadlines, windows and important dates for you to know. Check this out for specific information on your subjects.

Home Economics Project Deadline

March 2019 (exact date to be confirmed). 

The JC Home Ec and Music Practical Exams

(to be confirmed) The exact date you will have your Music/Home Ec practical exam will depend on your school, but it will be around Easter time, check back here later when the timeframe is confirmed.
