      Stalactites and stalagmites:

A feature of an underground karst region that I have studied are stalactites and stalagmites.A drop of rainwater forms on the roof of a cave. This evaporates and leaves a tiny speck of calcite on the roof.Overtime the speck of calcite builds up to form a column called a stalactite which hangs from the roof of a cave. When the rainwater fall onto the ground of a cave and evaporates,it leaves a speck of calcite which builds up to form an even thicker column called a stalagmite. When a stalactite and stalagmite meet,a pillar is formed eg.Burren Co.Clare
