How to get a H1/O1 in the Leaving Cert Engineering Exam

By Gráinne Enright - 1 minute read

There are quite a few tips you can follow to get a high mark in Engineering. The subject tends to vary a bit depending on the level, so we've made two guides this time; one for OL and one for HL.

Deciding Between Levels

You need to decide early in your final year if you are taking Higher Level or Ordinary Level. This is because the projects are different and you need to start the right project. There are quite a few differences between Higher and Ordinary Levels:

The Higher Level project is different than the Ordinary Level project. You need to more design in the Higher Level project, and some more information is needed in the Project Folder (Folio) document.

The exams are different for Higher and Ordinary levels. The Higher Level exam is longer, harder and counts for more (50%) of your total Engineering grade than the Ordinary Level exam (40%).

If you need CAO points for a College course, and you want or need to get those points using Engineering, you’ll probably need to take Higher-Level, and you’ll need to put more focus and time into your Theory and Exam revision.

If you take Ordinary Level you cannot get as many CAO points, so discuss it well with your teacher and at home before deciding.

Ordinary Level

If you've chosen to follow the ordinary level course, then try reading our guide on how to get an O1 in Engineering below.

Higher Level

If you're following the higher level course then read all of Gráinne's tips on how to get a H1 in the guide below:

Best of luck in the exam! You will be fine!
