Melody Writing Upbeat Question
JakeL26 Leaving Cert Music7

I'm just wondering, when doing question 1 of the composition paper, do you have to set up your answer any differently when there's an upbeat? From my understanding, whatever length the upbeat is, you have to take it away from the last bar. But what I'm not sure on is, when you are drawing the bar lines for the following 12 bars, do they have to be in line with the previous 4 or can you act like the upbeat wasnt there until b16 (check the attached images for a better explanation)? Essentially, can you fill out bar 4 on the top line or does it have to continue below the upbeat?

If there's an upbeat, you must include it in all of the bars.

so just copy the bar lines straight down from the first 4 bars?

Definitely the second example - add the 1st phrase mark after the phrase that's already there, put in the upbeat in bar 4 and continue!
