Everything you need to study Junior Cycle Geography

Junior Cycle Geography broadens your knowledge of the world and is very different to what you learn in primary school. The course itself is varied, from economic activity to volcanoes and earthquakes and from urban sprawl to map work. There is a lot of study to be done but there is no need to fear as Studyclix is here to make your studying much easier.

What's involved?

The Junior Cycle Geography final exam takes place in May and accounts for 90% of your overall grade. The remaining 10% comes from your Assessment Task.

As it is a common level exam, there will be a variety of questions to suit everyone. The exam takes place over a two-hour period and you will be answering 10 questions which contain a mixture of short questions and longer paragraph-style questions. Becoming familiar with the exam structure will mean that you know what to expect on the day of the exam so you can plan your study accordingly.

Here is a breakdown of the exam structure:

The exam

The final exam is worth 90% of the overall grade and lasts for 2 hours. There are 10 questions, all of which must be attempted.

CBAs

There are also two Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) which take place in 2nd and 3rd year:

  • CBA 1 (Geography in the News) is where students must report on an inquiry based on a recent media source that relates to a geographical event.
  • CBA 2 (My Geography) asks students to investigate geographical aspects of a local area.
The Assessment Task

This will be a written reflection task based on CBA 2 and is worth 10% of the overall grade. This may assess students' ability to reflect on their geographical thinking, evaluate new knowledge and reflect on the skills they have developed.

The final exam is worth 90% of the overall grade and lasts for 2 hours. There are 10 questions, all of which must be attempted.

Top tips for Geography

Study each topic and then try to answer the questions on Studyclix, checking the marking schemes as you go. The short questions examine all aspects of the course so it's best not to take shortcuts by leaving out sections of the course.

Make sure you know how to answer the question on a landform (rivers/sea/glaciers) as one of these comes up every year and finally, make sure all your diagrams and sketch maps are clearly labelled.
