Plant Responses | Definitions
Anatomical Adaptation
The physical methods that plants have that allow them to protect themselves from being eaten or damaged.
Chemical Adaptations
The production of a variety of chemicals that offer protection to the plant against herbivores and external environmental factors.
Chemotropism
The growth response of parts of a plant due to chemicals.
Geotropism
The growth response of parts of a plant due to gravity.
Growth
The increase in the number, volume or size of cells.
Growth Regulators
Growth regulators are chemicals found in the meristem of plants that influence plant growth.
Hydrotropism
This is the growth response of the roots of plants in response to water.
Meristem
A plant tissue found in the tips of the shoot and roots of a plant that can produce new cells by mitosis.
Negative Tropism
When a plant grows away from a stimulus.
Phototropism
The growth response of parts of a plant due to light.
Positive Tropism
When a plant grows towards a stimulus.
Response
The activity of a cell due to the presence of a stimulus.
Stimulus
A change in the environment that results in a response from an organism.
Thigmotropism
The growth response of a plant in response to contact/touch.
Tropism
A plant's growth response to an external stimulus coming from one direction.
