Plant Structure | Definitions
Active Transport
The movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration against their concentration gradient. This process uses energy in the form of ATP.
Cotyledon
A cotyledon is a seed leaf.
Dicotyledon
A plant that has two cotyledons in the seed.
Meristematic Tissue
This is plant tissue that can produce new cells by mitosis.
Monocotyledon
A plant that has a single cotyledon in the seed.
Organ
A structure composed of two or more different tissues that work together to carry out a specific function.
Osmosis
A passive process that involves moving water molecules from an area of higher water concentration to an area of lower water concentration through a semipermeable membrane.
Tissue
A group of similar cells working together to carry out a specific function.
Plumule
Forms the stem of a new plant developed from the embryo.
Radicle
Forms the root of a new plant developed from the embryo.
Herbaceous
Plants with a green soft stem that can photosynthesise.
Dermal Tissue
Protective outer layer of tissue in plants.
Vascular Tissue
Transport tissue in plants composed of xylem (transports water and dissolved minerals) and phloem (transports food).
Ground Tissue
All the other tissue in plants which is the bulk of the plant.
Endosperm
Triploid structure that is the source of food for the developing embryo in a seed.
