Blood and Circulatory System | Definitions
Antibody
An antibody is a protein made by plasma B-cells in response to the presence of an antigen.
Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the artery wall.
Cardiac Cycle
The series of events that occur during one heartbeat.
Heartbeat
Your heartbeat is the rhythmic expansion and contraction of the cardiac muscle.
Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system is a one-way system that collects the tissue fluid that surrounds each cell in the body and returns it to the blood.
Portal System
A portal system is a blood pathway that starts and ends in capillaries.
Pulse
The rhythmic expansion and contraction of the arteries.
Systole
The contraction of the heart muscles.
Closed Circulatory System
Blood is carried in blood vessels and moves in one direction under high pressure.
Pulmonary Circuit
Blood is pumped from the heart to the lungs and then returns back to the heart.
Systemic Circuit
Blood is pumped from the heart to the body and then returns back to the heart.
Diastole
When the heart is relaxed and no contractions are occurring.
Blood
Is the connective tissue and matrix in which blood cells are suspended.
Valves
Prevents the backflow of blood.
Plasma
Straw-yellow liquid part of blood consisting mostly of water.
Monocytes
Engulf and destroy pathogens by phagocytosis.
Lymphocytes
White blood cells that produce antibodies to fight antigens.
Lymph
Clear liquid in the lymphatic system formed by collecting extra cellular fluid from around the cells.
Lymph Nodes
Spherical-shaped organs of the lymphatic system that filter foreign particles from lymph and produces lymphocytes and antibodies.
Lymph Vessels
Are present in all organs and tissues in the body, functions in the transport of lymph and possess valves.
Subclavian Vein
Located in the right shoulder, this is where the lymph re-enters the blood system.
