Oxidation & Reduction | Definitions
Oxidation (Two Definitions)
Loss of electrons and an increase in oxidation number.
Oxidation Number
The charge which an atom of an element has, or appears to have, in a compound based on a set of man-made rules.
Oxidising Agent
A substance that causes oxidation. The oxidising agent gains the electrons and is therefore reduced in the process.
Reducing Agent
A substance that causes reduction. The reducing agent loses the electrons and is therefore oxidised in the process.
Reduction (Two Definitions)
Gain of electrons and a decrease in oxidation number.
Electrochemical Series
A list of metals arranged in order of their tendency to be oxidised.
Electrolysis
The breaking up of a substance due to the passage of an electric current through it in aqueous solution or when molten.
During Electrolysis
Oxidation occurs at the anode and reduction occurs at the cathode.
Electroplating
A layer of metal is put onto the surface of another metal.
Cut dotted horizontal lines. Fold vertical line.
