Berlioz Takes a Trip
Aired date: May 25, 1969
Plot: Bernstein discusses what he describes as the "first psychedelic symphony", Berlioz's La Symphonie Fantastique, examining the concept of the idée fixe in music and illustrating this concept with excerpts from the first movement. Bernstein analyzes the music and discusses the story line of the remaining movements which are performed by the Philharmonic.

The second movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique describes the hero at a sumptuous 19th century ball. The music captures the elegance and superficiality of such an event. There he sees his beloved and is overcome, but soon regains his composure.
This second movement is basically in Rondo form.

The fourth movement from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique marked Allegro ma non troppo - Marche au supplice (Procession to the scaffold). In this movement the artist tries to kill himself with a large dose of opium but the result is a nightmarish hallucination. He Dreams he has killed his beloved and a crowd approaches, leading him to the guillotine where he is executed. This was described by Bernstein as the first 'trip' in music. This movement is in sonata form.
